There has been increased concern with textured breast implants recently. There is a remote association with a type of lymph cell cancer. The incidence is very low – 1 in 3,500 patients with one type of implant, and 1 in 85,000 with another. The condition always produces symptoms such as sudden breast swelling, a lump, or changes in skin color of the breast. It is a very uncommon event, related to one type of implant only. Some patients, however, elect to have their implants removed permanently because of this remote risk. Others decide to have the offending implants removed and replaced with non-associated implants. These procedures are not OHIP insured. The procedures are day surgery under general anaesthetic. There is a significant complication rate, including bleeding, and delayed wound healing. If implants are removed permanently, the breast becomes quite flat and often deformed in appearance, with a difference in shape between each side.
